Claude Code burns ~15–20% of your tokens on a 3-word status line
A community analysis found that Claude Code sends each background agent's full transcript to its model every ~30 seconds just to generate a 3-5 word status line, costing roughly 15-20% of token spend (independent measurements: 18-26%), with no official setting to disable it. A MIT-licensed Bun preload script (no-agent-summary.js) suppresses these agent_summary timer calls without modifying the binary; on subscriptions the cost shows up as lost rate-limit headroom, and the requests are only visible via OpenTelemetry, not session logs.

What to doIf you use Claude Code background agents on Linux, consider installing the no-agent-summary.js preload via BUN_OPTIONS and re-verify after every Claude Code update.
