Announcing MCP support in Apigee hybrid: agentic tools that run in your own cluster

Google announced MCP support in Apigee hybrid 1.17.0 (released September 14, 2026), letting developers expose existing APIs as MCP tools for AI agents with the MCP data plane running inside their own Kubernetes cluster. MCP request traffic stays entirely within the cluster, configuration is pulled from the control plane (no inbound connections from Google), and it's disabled by default. Enabling it requires setting enableMcpServer: true in overrides.yaml and upgrading the apigee-operator chart before the apigee-org chart, and triggers a staged canary release of runtime pods.

What to doIf you run Apigee hybrid 1.17.0 or later and want agentic API access, enable MCP via Helm in a maintenance window, upgrading the apigee-operator chart before the apigee-org chart.
